One Dead After Stage Collapses at Big Valley

CAMROSE — One person is dead and four critically injured after a small portion of the main stage collapsed at the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose Saturday night. Another 15 people have been transported to hospital, said Camrose city police Chief Darrell Kambeitz. "The concert had been postponed and we were in the process of clearing out the (concert) bowl when the weather front hit," he said. STARS Air Ambulance was also on stand by, a spokesman confirmed. It all happened following a set by Billy Currington around 6 p.m. "It was calm and eerie for about 20 seconds then people began running," said Justin Bell, a freelancer covering the festival for Sun Media. The staging that may reach 60 feet off the ground collapsed within ten seconds, falling towards the backstage area. Paramedics were on scene immediately with injuries obvious, though the exact number of injuries was unknown. Paramedic and emergency vehicles continued to stream in as the backstage area was cleared by Camrose city police. Most concert-goers were seeking shelter in the large marketplace building near the main stage. The area was flooded with police, ambulances and paramedics, Bell added. By 7 p.m. heavy rains were pelting down. There are reports of injuries, but no details at this time.
